Yield: 6 sushi rolls

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Thing To Note

Before we dive into the recipe, here are a few tips for achieving the perfect sushi roll. First, ensure you have the right tools: a bamboo sushi mat, a sharp knife, and a bowl of water to keep your fingers and tools clean and moist while working with the rice. Second, practice makes perfect; don’t be discouraged if your first few rolls aren’t flawless. The joy of sushi-making lies in the journey, not just the final product.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sushi rice

  • 3 cups water

  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 6 sheets of nori (seaweed)

  • 1 cucumber, cut into thin strips

  • 1 avocado, sliced

  • 8 oz fresh salmon or tuna, thinly sliced (optional)

  • 1 carrot, julienned

  • Soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi for serving

Instructions

  • Prepare the Sushi Rice: Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rice and water in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for another 10 minutes. Transfer the rice to a large bowl.

  • Season the Rice: In a small bowl, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Gently fold this mixture into the rice using a wooden spoon or spatula. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.

  • Assemble the Sushi Rolls: Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface and lay a sheet of nori on top. Spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge.

  • Add Fillings: Arrange cucumber, avocado, carrot, and fish (if using) in a line about 1 inch from the bottom edge of the nori.

  • Roll the Sushi: Using the bamboo mat, carefully roll the nori and rice over the fillings, tucking the fillings in as you go. Continue rolling until you reach the top edge. Press gently to seal.

  • Cut the Rolls: Using a sharp, wet knife, slice the sushi roll into 1-inch pieces. Clean the knife with a wet cloth between cuts to ensure clean slices.

  • Serve: Arrange the sushi rolls on a platter and serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi on the side.
